I have to say that last night's "Raising the Bar #6" was one of the best ones. It was to bring back 90's Hiphop and everyone was supposed to pick their favorite 90's song and bring it back to 2011!! They covered songs from Wu-tang, Cypress Hill, Nas, Snoop, MC Hammer, Kriss Kross, Biggie, Pras, Big L, 2Pac, Lauryn Hill, Major Stress, KRS-ONE, Black Street...My cover song was SWV - Right Here (Human Nature Mix). Would it be fair to say that I WAS NOT in the right frame of mind...? lol Nonetheless, I think we all had a blast.

I will be travelling to Phonm Penh, Cambodia next month from the 4th to 10th June to do 1 thing. Well a few other things (which I shall not mention)..but our mission is:

TO RECORD A SONG EACH DAY IN A TOTALLY DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENT FOR 'ON THE BEAT AND PATH'

Imagine:
Water, serenity, greenery, water animals, birds, insects, beautiful people, peace, culture, language. Let me sum it up with one word.

JUNGLE???

Yes, I will be residing in a beautiful jungle (in a beautiful villa). Imagine the creativity and inspiration we will get from just being there and how it would influence our creative process....

The MoveMint 3rd Anniversary on Friday the 13th May 2011

Whats up from the corner of my apartment!!!

The MoveMint event turned out to be more successful than I thought it would be. There were so many things happening on the night from Rap battles, Beatbox, Live performances by Ras Muhammad , DJ Sarasa, Garuda who came down all the way from Singapore, Tatsuro, Illsteez!! and my homie Karmal finally released his EP "BANGKIT" . Congratulations again! This is the beginning of a loong journey ahead! Big ups bro.

Big ups to my favorite asian reggae ambassador Ras Muhammad who made it alll the way from Jakarta for our event! And he brought with him Daddy T whom he has a collaboration album with 'PROSA TINJU LIMA JARI' -- Go check him out yo! especially if you're a reggae music lover. If you bought his CD or managed to grab the FREE Cd's he was giving out -- I'm on track number 3 or 4? LOL Hillarious -- It's just a voice over ad.

So happy to see a lot of people that came down, and so proud of everyone supporting by paying a small entrace fee. It matters especially if you care about the movement, or any other events and organizers that are providing you a platform to release your inner most passion. So big ups to everyone who holds true to their passion and keeping it real and still trying to keep it alive in this CRAZY world we live in. For shizzles. <--- what does SHIZZLES mean Nadhira??? No idea.

Miss Universe Malaysia 2011

I had such an amazing experience doing the Miss Universe Malaysia 2011! It was in a mall!!! hahaha. I did a show with them on Saturday & Sundays!

2 sets with 2 songs in each -- I did 'You Got Me', 'Keep on Moving' & 'Feel That' feat. Vandal !
The staring peoplezz were just walking by...some waved, some smiled and some just stood there.. :)
Thank you so much Miss Universe Malaysia for letting me be part of it...it was fun.

I met miss Andrea Fonseka!! She was The Miss Universe Malaysia 2004. It's interesting that my job allows me to meet other celebrities who've made their mark in their own way...

AEST.MY reveals the type of chocolate Nadhira Nishaa could be bribed with and what you could win out of her.

Uh-Oh is Nadhira on the loose? Despite her weakness for chocolate, she tells us all about the music industry, what grosses her out and what she comes to fear the most.

Aest: Do you think it is difficult for artiste to be known or at least have a breakthrough in the music industry in Malaysia?
N: If you compare the music industry here to the US music industry, I’d have to say no, however…Malaysia has different markets to target and if you want to be ‘known’ and make more dosh than other artists, you should probably target the Malay market – they have a wider audience. As for the English market, it’s rather small and if you want to go international you have to start comparing yourself to the international market and see where you fit, because outside of Malaysia is where you will get most support from.

Aest: What was the challenge you faced when you first came around to Malaysia as an artist?
N: I’m not too sure but you could say one of it is opening up to strangers.

Aest: You were in a band called Amethyst (as well as other groups), was it difficult for you to transit from being part of a group member to being solo?
N: Yes and No – Yes for having to deal with pouring your heart out all ALONE on stage, No for being able to move about easily and grow faster in your craft. You represent you, not your band anymore

Aest: Tell us more about your personality as an artist as well as a person in general (are there any differences)?
N: My producer tells me I’m way serious in the studio – hope that’s not a bad thing! I just like getting my sh*t done so I can move on to the next task. Hehe. As a person, I think I’m pretty friendly, open and approachable.

Aest: Tell us are there any weird habits that annoy you?
N: People burping for fun, dirty fingernails, procrastinators, unpunctuality, cheaters – are these even WEIRD at all because it seems to be normal among Malaysians! Ha ha!

Aest: Do tell us about your love affair with chocolates; tell us how you came to love chocolates; any childhood memories?
N: I just LUURRRVEE chocolate. I love it so much that I probably should stop eating it! I can’t think of any childhood memories that don’t involve chocolates. Haha… chocolate chocolate chocolate! It’s great to have a bunch stocked up in the fridge, or hidden, so you’ll be surprised when you find it!

Aest: Were there times where pressure gets to you? What are the sources of it?
N: Oh yes, different sources for different types of pressure but one of it is if someone rushes me to get ready before going out – like if I felt like I wanted to look good and feel comfortable, but I only have 10 minutes to work with, then that’s pressure!! haha!

Aest: What do you do to de-stress yourself? More chocolates?
N: Sit back on the couch and eat sandwiches!! and laze around and do absolutely nothing!

Aest: You’re a girl who needs chocolates; if you’re about to be bribed with chocolate, from any of us, what would we get?
N: Hahahaha! Probably an empty chocolate wrapper, or MAYBE a “From Malaysia with Love” CD but that also entirely depends on what type if chocolate you want to bribe me with. Hint hint, I love milky swiss chocolates!

Aest: Do you think you could make a career out of making chocolates? Do you see yourself as a chocolatier?
N: Now that you asked, YES – I can so see myself as a chocolatier. I would have so much fun making it, shaping it, flavoring it, packaging it…..but then again I also see myself as a jeweler, and a pottery sculpture, and a visual artist too!! I just love creating!

Aest: What do you fear the most? Why and how did you develop the phobia?
N: I still haven’t gotten over the fear of earthworms. As much as I would love to get into gardening, I’m not sure how possible that is. I can’t even stand the sight of it. It started out when I was really small in UK. There was a school field trip to the park. I’d lie down on the grass then I noticed I was on top of a lot of earthworms…everywhere I looked there were worms! It was like a season for the earthworms to be out and about! I also accidentally squished a few and saw the squished worm stuck on my jumper. It was HORRIBLE!

Aest: Could you tell us all about your toughest gig?
N: I’m not too sure – I think all gigs are tough!

Aest: What do we have to do to get a free CD out of you?
N: Let’s do barter trade! I’ll exchange it for you with a 10 Ringgit note! I’m sure you could afford that! ;)

Aest: You’ve been blogging; when could readers expect your site to be up?
N: Our aim is to have it up before June!

Aest: Do you think you could make a good writer?
N: I’m already a great writer! Just listen to my songs, I wrote them all. Do you need a ghost writer to launch your singing career? You know who to call!

Aest: Will we see you on the big screen someday?
N: I’m assuming you mean the Silver Screen? Hmmm… Who knows!

Aest: If you were ever caught in a scandal, what would it be?
N: One day when Cadbury’s distribution center is reported robbed, well, the scandal will surely arise when they find the trail of wrappers leading right to my door.

Aest: Do you think an artist could pour out emotions in a song to a certain extent only?
N: An artist is only limited to their own personal limitation, so if an artist is in touch with their inner-most emotions it will be felt through their song.

Aest: Why do you think songs with emotions appeal to listeners?
N: The listeners can usually relate to emotional songs, whether about love lost or love found. On that level we all can relate to songs about love.

Aest: Do you think you will be moving out of Malaysia in the future?
N: Right now, Malaysia is the safest and best place to live! If for some reason that changes, I’ll be on the next flight out!

Aest: Any albums out this year? How about new projects that you will be involve in?
N: I will be releasing my latest project with Indonesian Super Producer, Wizzow, mid 2011 and am really excited for my fans to hear what we have in store. I now extend an invitation to YOU (AEST.MY) to come to my launch!

Aest: Who would you like to work with?
N: You want me to be honest?! Ciara, Ne-Yo, Bob Marley, Siti Nurhaliza, Drake, Ronny Haryanto, T.I, Usher, Nicky Minaj, Timbaland, Pharell….. and the list goes on…..

Traxx Upstage Goes Live!

Last night didn't turn out like how I expected -- mainly because I was not in a good mood the whole day, but I ended up having fun! I have to say, that Kyoto Protocol totally rocked the house, I really enjoyed their performance! Wanted Symphony was also amazing...but sad to say that the sound quality for when Kraft and myself went on was terrible (we were running on minus1's)-- so whoever that was there...sorry you had to bare with me on the low sound quality. I was a bit annoyed in the beginning but later on I was like....'screw that! I'm gonna have fun!' so I just did my thing.
It is very frustrating for an artist to not be able to work with good sound, but to be expected to deliver wonders. Past is past. I'm gonna sleep on it.....

I really appreciate Traxx fm for having me on board and for supporting me, because I wouldn't have had as much fun yesterday if it wasn't for you! Thanks again...:)

What's going on??!?!?

It's been a while since I blogged and mainly it's because I have been lazy OR busy going places and attending different events.

You see, initially this blog was created due to boredom and I wanted to just create a space where I can showcase and talk about the "creative" things I have been doing musically. It was Jason's idea. And then in time, people started responding to my posts so i thought maybe i should just continue doing it...

lalalalalala then almost 2 years later (or maybe 1 and a half), i realized that i've created a 'portfolio' of a lot of my...so to say... 'creative work' and it all became serious...like...releasing my EP "From Malaysia With Love", gettings my songs played on the radio, getting interviews and write ups in the magazines/newspapers, having my music video on MTV and local tv stations, people were booking me for shows, i became a brand ambassador...etc....and fast forward to present time....

This blog will soon be GONE! not fully though because I will finally have a new proper website up...you shall see!!!

And on top of that I have a confession to make -- I been working on new tracks and I am DIGGINGGGG each and everyone of it...What I plan to do with this next project will remain a secret for now until everything is finalized. I surprise myself sometimes...

So after being back from Indonesia and Sabah, the first official event I "SANG" (if you call it singing)at was "Raising The Bar #3" - Hosted by our homey Jin Hackman.
We had amazing artists like KARMAL, Flow Artist, Shazet, Vandal, SSK, Boss Chan, KTM and on the decks was SKWARE-1 & Jocular.

There was the XXII tee's, LANSI caps, CD's from our local homebwoys...

So to sum it all up, It has been a great 2011 so far!

Tell us more about yourself.
I happen to be a Malaysian who did not grow up in Malaysia. I grew up in three countries – UK, Brunei and Indonesia, but I came back to Malaysia after completing my high school and I have been living here for seven years now. Living abroad is all about meeting the different people and getting to know the various cultures, and it has been a wonderful experience. I’ll never trade it for anything else.

How did you get started in the music industry?
I’ve always been really interested in music since young. I sang a lot and I’ve been recording my own stuff since I was a kid. Though I did get sidetracked as I grew up – I worked in advertising for a little while after college, I’m now seriously focusing on my music again. I’m doing it full time now.

What’s your brand of music like?
Experience wise, it has been a little crazy. I started off playing classical music on the piano – that was my first hands-on experience with music. Then I became more involved in rock, blues and jazz. Actually during my teenage years I was playing a lot of rock songs. I guess I have experienced making a lot of different types of music. My direction now? I would say more soul and R&B

What’s your musical inspiration?
Growing up, I listen to a lot of Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Sheila Majid. In a way, those artistes have inspired me since I was very young to be really involved in music. Now I would probably say what inspires me most is what I go through in life, the people I meet and situations I come across. I take that stuff and transfer it to my music. You could say life inspires me.

What’s your fashion style like?
It has really evolved over time. My style five or ten years ago is different from what you see now. I used to really wear a lot of black. Yes, it made me feel really dark all the time and I got tired of it. So, I started wearing colors. Now I feel more like a rainbow and it makes me happy.

Do you think that fashion and music goes hand in hand?
Not for me. I don’t combine my music and my fashion style. I feel that its two separate things. I don’t change the way I dress because of my music. You know how when you’re younger you dress a certain way and as you get older your fashion changes? You change, your music changes, your fashion style changes. It happens separately. It’s part of how one’s life evolves I think.

Tell us about your experience being a PUMA ambassador and about filming for their Happy Hunting campaign.
Being a PUMA ambassador is awesome. It’s kind of odd seeing myself on a big poster though. Shooting the PUMA Happy Hunting video was fun but tiring. I had to arrive at the Gardens mall before all the shops were open. Then I and to run around as they filmed me. Definitely fun but really, really tiring.

We caught up with Puma’s latest fashion ambassador to discuss the stylish and sassy aspects of life.

1. How would you describe your personal style?
“My style is influenced by my mood. Depending on how I feel that day is how I choose to clothe myself… if I feel like a bird, I might just wear a bird suit and walk around.”
2. What’s your current fashion obsession?
“I don’t normally have fashion obsessions BUT these days, I’ve been wearing a lot of high-cut sneakers, flat-rimmed caps and chunky jewelleries… easy, sporty and girly at the same time.”
3. Share your biggest fashion pet-peeves with us.
“Don’t have one. I don’t really care what people wear as long as it makes them happy.”
4. How does it feel to be appointed as the brand ambassador of Puma Malaysia?
“It feels great but at the same time, it feels very random. However, I am honored to be among the chosen ones!”
5. Are there similarities between the brand Puma and your personality?
“Definitely! Puma is a brand for active people and I am really active in my movements and how I approach life in general… so, Puma sneakers work well for my active feet… hehe! Not to forget, I dig their designs – that’s the most important thing.”
6. Tell us about your most memorable fashion moment.
“I don’t really have one… maybe a silver spacesuit for the snowy weather, but that was like 20 years ago.”
7. Will there be plans for more fashion collaborations with Puma?
“I really hope so! They are busy with a lot of campaigns and I am always a part of it.”
8. Would you like to design your own fashion line for this brand?
“Can I say HELL YEAH? If not, then…YES!”

What"s going on blog!! I haven't visited you in a while coz I've been away in Indonesia working on new chuunes.
I had such an amazing time in Jakarta seeing my old school mates, music friends and just completely immersing myself in getting creative and inspired.

JIS mate Grace Astari.

I don't know but the Jakarta vibe tends to take out a lot from me. Throughout the whole time, i was working from a home studio at Ras Muhammad's. Anyhow, me being the psycho perfectionist that i am, will not drop any new tunes online or radio until everything is ready with the mixing and mastering. Be sure to hear some amazing new stuff from me! I'm excited!

Singing the national anthem 'Negaraku'

It was an honor to be able to sing 'negaraku' (My Country) for the Asian Basketball League (ABL). The game was live on ESPN. It has been a very long time since I've sung the anthem but I did it!! and it was alright :) I could have done better...!! Perhaps the next one?

I'm going to be gone this whole month. Will be in Jakarta for 3 weeks for a creative retreat! Y'know...we have to get outta here once in a while to get inspired. I hope it all comes to me and my creative juice will flow!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

You know that people say 'how you spend your new years is how the rest of your year will turn out'? Ever heard of that saying? Not sure if I believe it but this was how I spent my new years. At a Mauy Thai event watching bunch of guys kick eachother's ass. What a kick watching them fight! Did I mention that it was live on TV Channel AXN and ASTRO ARENA?

Day 1 performances were Atilia followed by Poova.
Day 2 performances were Nadhira followed by Senoritas

What's new? Nothing much.
Living a spliffin' life filled with adventurous rides and rollercoasters...haven't found the 'modjo' yet. All I know is that I look forward everyday to spending my January in my old home town - as i like to call it... Jakarta!!
Again, tryna find that 'modjo' but I'm sure once I'm in it, it will be something else. I think I feel this way because it's December therefore I feel like I have a reason to feel like I need to get re-charged. Man, do I even know what I'm talking about?It's like...I almost need to be in love with the music in order for me to spark that fire. Do you know??

Just dropping something random - I will get more done that's for sure...this is just a crapola teaser!

I must say that December has been the busiest and most productive month in my life. So many events, so many people, lots of smiles and photo taking, and most importantly someone just got hitched...!! ;)

Friday - We drove up to Penang. I had such an amazing weekend performing for 7aste - Mild Seven. Satisfied that I managed to eat at my favorite penang spot in Gurney Drive at the hawkers stalls! Didn't get to snap any decent photo's to put up!

Saturday - The next day I went to Ipoh Sunway Lagoon for DVJ G Mix's set with Vandal. A group from Taiwan (I think!) by the name of Y2J came down to perform. They really had their massive chinese crowd singing along to their tunes!
I didn't understand a single word.

I have to admit though, I really love how scenic Ipoh is. I love all the mountains around that city it's beautiful! And I feel this way every single time I go there.

I bumped into my old friends which I haven't seen for over 2 years in a cave at the lagoon as I was walking to the toilet.

Took this off google. Can u Imagine a gig in a cave?

(I heard people growling in the cave) They were there for a metal gig called 'HITAM HITAM DALAM GUA'. hahahha how random is that? It was a Necrotic Chaos reunion with Wira back from Japan. Happy to have 'accidentally' bumped into the Ipoh metal militants! What a day I tell you.

Sunday - Drove back down to KL and headed straight to watch ABL (Asian Basketball League).
KL Dragons vs. Slammers (from Thailand). Apparently Slammers were on top and leading this season's ABL however, they did not SLAM as much. KL Dragons led the game and won, again! - I realized that the KL Dragons soundtrack is by Rogue Squadron...nice one guys..!

Overall - I missed the PUMA event that happened at Ecoba last Friday! I saw an awesome video footage of Wakaka Bboy crew performing. I was supposed to be there but hey!! there's only 1 of me.

First and foremost, I want to apologize for not being able to make an appearance at the PUMA party at ECOBA, Damansara Perdana, however, there's a surprise video for you on that day if you attend it! If only I could be in two places at once!

I have another event that's happening in Penang where will be doing 2 sets of performances with backup dancers for 7aste Mild Seven. I've yet to do a Penang crowd on a Friday night, so I am really looking forward to it.

My next 7aste Mild Seven event will be held on the 17th at ECOBA, Damansara Perdana - (Same location as the PUMA one this Friday)

Whattsss guuudd...!

I told myself to stop trying to make the house spotless and give a bit of my attention to update this! So far, I'm loving my new place (in Puchong), lots of greenery, which I love! and so many different types of shops, restaurants that I can access in the new neighborhood. It's so peaceful and my room overlooks a big field and a 'bukit'. I DO miss my old place at Damansara Perdana (Simply because I was on the 1st floor with a balcony view of a really nice swimming pool) but that place is turning into a concrete jungle...which am not really that interested in....

I'm so so so so excited to get my home studio set up so I can start working on the millions of songs that has been buried in that folder on my desktop for months!! It's time to let it out people... just wait for that...

Anyhow, last Tuesday I attended the PUMA campaign launch for 'HAPPY HUNTING'. I had a good time, the launch was fantastic, and the food was awesome. I had a good time 'shopping' for my 2011 gears. Bittersweet, Rina Omar & Vandal was there at the event too so you can ask them how much fun they had!! ;)

A recap of my activities a few days ago:

Thursday: I took a bus out of KL first thing Thursday morning (4 Nov 2010) and arrived at Singapore 5 hours later. We just wandered around town looking at studio equitments and electronics.

Friday: I had a great time performing at the "GoodTimes" event. The crowd showed mad love and support and I kicked it alongside 4 other DJ's. I love that part of Singapore especially the lanes around Bali Lane and Haji Lane. Rare concept shops selling all sorts of things, antique wares, books, new trend 'lapsap' fashion stuff, music, etc... Bumped into Ion there so we kicked it with his buddy. I was hoping that I had time to meet up with my friends there. Stayed up all night incase i would oversleep and miss the bus the next day.

Saturday: Took the first bus out of Singapore and back to KL. Back to apartment hunting! and REST!!

Sunday: Nadhira enters the Hitz.fm MET10 chart as a newbie for the week with song 'YOU GOT ME' Listen or Buy here.

We are launching "From Malaysia With Love" in Singapore at Blue Jazz cafe. Bali Lane/Haji Lane and those lanes around that are have interesting concept shops...

I'll be up alongside DJ Motif, DJ Matty Wainwright, DJ Lihkin and apparently a "DJ" Vandal. :)

I am going through a major shift in my life in terms of musical & spiritual growth that allows me not to only understand humans better, but to also be fully conscious of the things that are happening around me. The realization of this consciousness helps you accept the level of success you have achieved at this point in your life. I feel so blessed to have had so many people help me along the way, whether in the form of contributing their time, energy, their mind and knowledge, and sincerely being there for me even though I was not at my best.

Moving on, I am working on my next music project as steps have been taken to further execute my vision. And while I'm at it, I will cut this short.

Dear blog. I am super sorry for not keeping things up to date. For the past week and a half, my life has been filled with madness but positive ones!

My elder sister just got hitched which is good news, the wedding was lovely though I made a fool out of myself by dancing Lady Gaga's 'Bad Romance' with my cousins as a surprise for my sister. I also sang her favorite song from Hercules 'I won't say I'm in love'. Her wedding team did a good job with everything. If only I had picture to put up. The bad news is that aunties and uncles was asking 'when is my turn'?. Can I just say that that is the worst question you could ever get. However, it was expected...so I guess I'll just let it go in one ear and out the other...perhaps when I go to a funeral I should ask them the same question, no?? lol. Jokes. I got that from someone.

On top of all the wedding events (3 to be exact), last Friday was the PUMA ARCHIVE UNCOVERED PARTY. I had fun. Floor Fever backed me up so big ups and mad love to you guys. And Vandal, always there to back me up and even be my Ludacris, big ups.

Over the last couple of months, I did a lot of self motivation work and attended talks by International motivational speakers who are successful in what they do. The seminars were held by Guerrilla Entrepreneurs.

One of the speakers I met during the G.E Series was Lloyd Luna, all the way from the Philippines. He is also an author who just released a new book titled 'WHY AM I WORKING?'.

Funny story. A real one...

I was over at Pavilion for the MASiF 2010 event. The stage and sound was nice. I always enjoy the big sound system booooming madness, makes me feel like I could sing my heart out....

Anyways.... So then I was just strolling around the mall looking for food and drinks, then up escalator looking at random stuff. I decided to go into the PUMA store to look at some of their items I wanted to get for myself...I saw some really cool jackets, shoes and bags for women.

So...after I walked out of the store I turned around and saw THIS!

I was like... "really?"

MASiF 2010

You know I love the big stage, pumpin' sounds, lights and action right? The show I did for MASiF 2010 was great, I had a good time. I'm not sure about you guys though. However, I was a bit upset at how my 20 minute set got cut to a 6 minute set. It is frustrating for an artist to not have accomplished a planned mission. I guess big events tend to overdose on artists, worrying that there wouldn't be enough performances to fill in the silent gaps, apparently, almost everyone got cut...

However, I went up there and did my thing. So a big thank you to the event organizers for having THE MOVEMINT represent everyday from Wednesday to Sunday! Shout outs to Vandal for handling all this for the kids. If it weren't for you...we wouldn't have known artists like Kraft, Sona One, Jin Hackman, SSK, Myself, (drop me more names and I'll add onto the list!) If you're interested, you can listen to more of the local hip hop stuff on MY FLOW .

And not to forget, hollering to the newly emerged beatboxers in Malaysia. They all grew out of no where and just appeared one day... :) Bless! I think the "entertainment" industry should pay a closer attention to the independent scene. We got REAL talent out here.

Also, salute to Malaysian Hip Hop blog. The online tabloid... hehe!

I been real busy over the past couple of weeks, last week especially since it was nearing Eid...I spent the whole weekend with non other but the family, took a drive down to Negeri Sembilan, where my parents are originally from, we convoyed with 5 cars. It was fun. We ate Ketupat, Lemangs and Rendangs the whole time!

Man...I think I gotta get that phone it's so easy with emails and the whole free messaging system -- Tho I do think that the world has become a bit psycho when it comes to technology, everything is so hi-tech, too much for me at least! I have to admit though, that the blackberry is a pretty slick creation -- I am more interested in the features rather than the 'look and feel' of it.

The Interview

Nadhira when did you start singing?
The first time I sang was when I was 6. It was to the song Lagendaby Sheila Majid. Since then I’ve been singing my whole life. I’ve been involved in music from school and have won competitions. Singing is something I have always wanted to do. I just didn’t know when it was going to happen. So I decided to quit my job and pursue it.

Can you tell us how your classical piano background helps you in your music?
It helps a lot. It helps me when it comes to me composing music. It’s definitely helpful as I don’t need to bug anyone to come over and help do anything for me. I also self-taught myself the guitar.

Tell us about your EP that you just released.
I just launched an EP called “From Malaysia with Love”. I did that because I was going to be touring Canada. It was something for the Canadian market. The EP is all about love songs. The reason I called it “From Malaysia with Love” is because I have been travelling so much my whole life that I wanted to make something from home."

"Can you tell us how it has been performing in Canada, compared to locally?
It’s been good. Performing in Canada totally opened my mind to some things. I think it helped a lot in terms of confidence. Seeing that the people in Canada were really supportive of my music helped a lot.

What is it about you that your fans don’t know about?
I am addicted to chocolates. I am a chocoholic. A lot of people say that I come across as someone arrogant. But I’m really loving and warm. I guess it’s because that I’m normally quiet, and people don’t know this unless they approach me and get to know me. I love painting. I do batik painting. I love doing crafts like pottery and ceramic. Guess that’s something about me that people wouldn’t know.

What phone do you use?
I am currently using Nokia E71.

What do you think about it?
I think it’s a cool phone. I like it. So far so good. Just that it hangs on me sometimes.

Do you use the apps on your phone?
To be honest, no. I don’t use much of the apps. I don’t think I am making full use of my phone. I just use it to browse the Internet and check my emails.

What do you think about selling your music as mobile content?
I think it’s a good way to promote music. By being able to give my fans that option, I think they have been supporting me by buying my music, especially my caller ring tones.

How does it feel when you call someone who has your song as a caller ring tone?
It’s kind of cool. It feels weird at first, knowing that everyone who calls can hear the same thing, as well. But it feels good now.

Do you have a Twitter account?
I do. Its @nadhiranishaa. I am quite active on it. Please do follow me to find out more about my gigs.

What is the new phone you are planning to get?
The iPhone, definitely. You can do so much with the iPhone.

What apps on the iPhone are you addicted to?
I love the games. My favourite game is Bejeweled. I am so hooked on that. I can be on it forever, just playing on and on.

How do you use technology to promote your music?

I will be performing at Laundry the Curve on August 5th for the RRecords Night. I also have a performance in Singapore for the Singapore Youth Olympics on August 18th. You can catch me there."

Feeling the flow

From a metal growler to a classy rnb singer, Nadhira has come a long way since her early days of being in rock bands with the need to scream her emotions out. These days, she’s since broken away from her groove-deprived shackles and revealed the inner workings of her tender heart. The result is the very personal, rnb-driven EP From Malaysia With Love.

Growing up around the world as a young kid exposed this beautiful, soft-spoken young lady to the harsh realities of life. “I was a good student, but I also bullied people,” says Nadhira. “I wasn’t that mean y’know, but I wasn’t that nice either.” But while the outside world would occasionally come into contact with this side of Nadhira, she admits that when it comes to family, nothing else matters and the bond that they share amongst each other has always remained strong. This includes a close relationship with baby brother Naqib aka Qbe from hip hop duo Dose Two and The 8TV Quickie’s new host.

Nadhira grew up with rock music permeating her home, so joining a rock band was seemingly a natural progression. But after she and her boyfriend of 6 years parted ways, she decided to channel the pain and anger she felt into poetically charged rnb songs. “Before the 1st Too Phat album came out, I was in a relationship with the ‘third member’, Dr. K,” she reveals. “So when we broke up, I just wrote all those stuff and I also wanted to use something that was meaningful to me to release.” As a result, “all those stuff” amassed into her 1st single ‘Do It Again’.

Writing and singing about issues that are close to her heart didn’t come easy for Nadhira, especially when the songs exposed a certain vulnerability to her identity as an individual. But she admits that they have become a therapeutic way to channel her emotions. “I knew that if I wanted to come out with the music that I write, I needed to be honest,” she explains. “When I was with my band, I never wrote the music. So when I started writing my own music, it was always about love. I think it’s just part of growing up.”

This EP of 6 tracks and 2 remixes took about 8 months to finish, with up-and-coming producer Tatsuro Miller from Global City Music taking charge of most of the production duties. When Nadhira’s friends from around the world found out that she was working on an EP, they requested for a copy. For this reason, she named it From Malaysia With Love. The name is also an acknowledgement to her country of origin.

Fast forward to a new chapter in Nadhira’s life and she’s currently the main squeeze of The Movemint’s MC Vandal. As her supportive other half and one who understands the industry inside and out, Vandal has definitely played a big part in making inroads into her success locally and overseas. The couple recently flew to Vandal’s home city of Toronto, Canada shortly after the launch of Nadhira’s EP at The Movemint’s 2nd anniversary party where they played a few gigs and was amazed by the support.

That experience has since opened new doors for Nadhira as an artist, subsequently leading to bookings for a number of shows in the coming months. It’s just proof of the symbiosis in these 2 talents’ personal and professional relationship dynamic. “Vandal is my manager, but he was my boyfriend way before he became my manager. We met through business dealings so no, we don’t have a cheesy, romantic story to tell,” she chuckles. J

"From Malaysia With Love" Acoustified!

It was the first time I had ever done an acoustic set of my songs in "From Malaysia With Love". I really loved the vibe that Aaron (lead guitar) and Christopher(Rhythm guitar/drums) added to it...They gave the songs a different feel...

I was so happy to see so many of my friends there that actually took time to come out and watch me...I have to admit though, I was a bit nervous because there was some people in the crowd that I really look up to and always expect the best from me...I wanted to be able to deliver what they expected...and I did, so that's an accomplishment.

Sorry! But I can't help but tell the truth when it comes to my songs...haha...I'm not a very good liar because my face says it all...so you know, I wouldn't be the best actor!

To everybody that are interested to participate in the Lompat Hip Hop event for the KL Krash Pad home down in chowkit, please feel free to get in touch with us at themovemint@gmail.com and we’ll let you know how you can get involved . The first round of events will be held this Sunday from 5-7 at the Nur Salam home.We will be having a mini concert for the kids, held by our local artists..

Our objective for hosting such an event is to bring the people together and unite all the kids that don’t come from safe homes like ours. Some of them are orphans, children who come from abusive backgrounds, most of them are stateless – illegal immigrants born in Malaysia with no passport or id, which doesn’t allow them to go to school to learn…KL Krash Pad is the safe location for these kids who can learn and participate in activities that we do. Basically, we want to pull them out of wandering in the streets and turn to positive activities instead. We hope to somehow be part of their lives and spark the interest for them to excel in arts. That is our mission.

The Lompat Hip Hop is followed by a number of workshops to teach the kids the elements of hip hop and to see this as a positive way of life. If you’re interested to find out more. Get in touch with The MoveMint and we will fill you in on the details.

Interview – Upcoming singing starlet Nadhira

Rising star Nadhira seems to be on a roll! The songstress has a No.1 hit single in Malaysia AND wowed audiences in Canada. MSN Entertainment spoke to the pretty lass and discovered that aside from her love of cupcakes, the self-professed beach bum also has a penchant for travelling and Mariah Carey.

You just returned from a promotional trip to Canada. How was the response there?

It was very good! It was very positive. People were very supportive of my music. As an artiste, they look up to you. They think you’ve very creative.

Why Canada? How did the trip come about?

My manager hooked me up with a lot of shows there because my release was coming out. We were just planning to tour there. I had gone into the studio and I recorded some stuff and we thought, “hey let’s do something, let’s do a little tour.” So, we decided to go to Canada.

You did quite a lot of shows there.

Yeah, about six shows in three cities. The ExploreASIAN festival at the University of British Columbia where they had a day dedicated to Asians. It was so much fun. I met a lot of Malaysians and Singaporeans as well. I met a lot of Malaysians who don’t know much about Malaysia. They’ve never been here. So that was kind of strange. They were asking me a lot of questions about Malaysia.

How does performing in Canada compare to performing in Malaysia?

The people there (Canada) are very supportive of music. They’re always supportive of anyone’s music. In Malaysia, it’s good but there’s a smaller crowd that listens to your music. Not everyone can accept your music.

So Canada first, where else next?

I’m hoping around Asia first, maybe Japan or China soon.

China sounds fun. So will you record a song in Chinese then?

[laughs] If I can! That would be funny!

We were surprised to learn that you used to be a metal singer! How did you go from hardcore music into the groovy and sensual style that you’ve adopted now?

Not so much a metal singer but more of a singer in a metal band. Singing is singing, right. The type of music that you listen to changes from time to time. I’ve always listened to R&B as well but I love Rock. So at that time I was listening to a lot of rock and singing whenever I can with rock bands. Whereas now, I listen to a lot of pop and R&B type of music.

Who influences your sound?

I grew up listening to a lot of Mariah Carey. For R&B – Aaliyah during her days.

Your single ‘Do It Again’ reached No.1 on HITZ.fm. What’s something you’d keep doing over and over and over again, aside from your music?

I’d travel! I’d go on my whole life and go places, just exploring new places.

Yeah, I love cupcakes!

If you hadn’t become a professional singer, what would you be doing today?

I’d be in Advertising. I was in Advertising for four years and decided to stop and do this [music] full time.

Your album is titled ‘From Malaysia With Love’. What do you love most about Malaysia?

I love the east coast of West Malaysia – the beaches are so beautiful! I’m a beach bum and that’s what I love most about Malaysia. I tell all my friends about the beaches here. You can just go for short getaways within nature, if you like hiking and waterfalls. I think I’m lucky to come from here [Malaysia]. I don’t have to go so far to clear my mind.

CAMPUR CHART goes LIVE!

Yup...the show happened at BORNEO RAINFOREST in Sunway, it was my first time there...I have to say that I really enjoyed myself. I didn't know what to expect, since it was pretty much my FIRST showcase since I've been back from Canada. I have officially become a fan of GILA MONSTARZ and DESERTERS. They are such a great band! Reminds me of the days when I was listening to Cursive. DESERTERS deserve more followers!! Click on their link and 'LIKE' them to show support....you're not going to regret it.

KL Krash Pad

"KL Krash Pad, which includes Pusat Aktiviti Kanak Kanak, is a 24 hour activity center and 'safehouse' that wants to provide a 'safe,' healthy and loving environment for all children under the age of 18, living or loitering, in and around KL area. Children registered at the center are given food, shelter and are exposed to educational, health and recreational activities and programs that otherwise may not be accessible to them.

On an average day, there are about 30 children who attend a program at the center. Currently, this number increases to around 70 children on weekends. Most who come to the center are under the age of 12, but the number of teenagers who attend a program is on the rise. To date we have over 90 children registered.

Who are these kids? Most of the children are poor and discriminated against and are, from the areas around Chow Kit and TAR the greater parts of KL. They are, for the most part, unable to have their basic needs met and there is little adult supervision. Thus, many children stay on the streets in the middle of the night and are deemed as 'high risk' children.

KL Krash Pad is a collaboration project between the Department of Welfare (JKM), Wilayah and Yayasan Salam, Malaysia to assist, protect and address the issues that these children face and to provide a 'safe' zone or sanctuary for them."

Ooops!! Decided to extend my stay in Canada!

I'm finally done with the tours, had a blast met so many wonderful people!

During this trip, I can't even count how many times I got on the Ferry. From Salt Spring to Vancouver to Salt Spring to Van Island to Salt Spring to Vancouver and times that by a thousand. I don’t know if I like the East Coast better or the West Coast. I could always like both. I met so many artists on this trip. Seems like every other person walking down the road is! Moka Only, Elaine, Narai, MannameWHO, Shamik Dynamik (The awesomest beat boxer in the WORLD!! The WORLD!!!) …and I think I’ll stop here only because there’s way too many to name and I suck because I forgot.

Vandal recorded a track with Moka Only and hoped I would jump on the track too but instead I slept because I was ngantuk! (Sleepy).

I also took time off from the travel to go spend a day with Laurie in Victoria, Vancouver Island!! My highschool buddy back when I was in JIS (Jakarta International School). We went to go watch SHAD perform in town... He’s getting HOT here in Canada. Check him out..!

I am so glad to be able to take time off for the tour because sometimes it takes you to get out of your comfort zone to get re-charged and inspired, internally...

LIVE in Kentizen, Vancouver!

The show we did for MABC (Malaysian Association of British Columbia) was fun. I’ve never done a dinner event before so that was my first…It was an intimate setting, I had a good time I don’t know about you... 4x3 played and Vandal performed too. He did some raps in Malay so the elderly crowd was like ‘yay!!’ and showing their thumbs up and some even clapped… So I thought that was hilarious…I’m sure they had a good time seeing a mat salleh talk and rap in Malay. Going there and representing Malaysia actually felt like home...thanks to MABC for organizing the event and managing to slot us in the schedule. Appreciate every second of it..

4x3 Invited me to sing a song with them. I messed up because I forgot the lyrics. What else is new...!

I also met Mr. Haris Vice President for Tourism Malaysia in British Columbia. He bought a copy of my CD and got me to sign it…hehe…he will be transferring back to Malaysia soon…so we just had a little chat about how I did some work for Tourism Malaysia back when I was doing Advertising.

This is out of the topic but I REALLY want to thank Andrew from Fattire Photography and Maureen for bringing me BELACAN because I couldn’t find it anywhere on the Island or the stores I tried to find it in. He knew where the Asian market was so he got it there for me. He got me Cili Kering (Dried Chillies) too!!! How sweet.

Q: WHY was I looking for BELACAN?
A: Because there will be German’s coming over to the house for dinner and I want to cook a Malaysian meal.

Q: What will I be cooking?
A: My delicious chicken curry with my famous Sambal Belacan (Shrimp paste and Chilli). Meal is to be served with rice.

I had so much fun performing at The Tree House! Such a hippy place... people wanna listen to your story if you tell them you're not from Canada...so being Canadian and having cold weather day to day...I LOVE rubbing it in their faces that I come from a land where it's summer day and night .... ahhh the beach...palm trees...the sea....birds.... hot chicks in bikini's....really.....that's MALAYSIA for you.

Moving on, I will be performing at the University of British Columbia ExplorASIAN Alumni
There's gonna be thousands of people there which is quite nerve wrecking but I'll survive...I hope..!

I arrived Toronto on 13th May, hung out with Jason's friends. The city is really different and unique and there are so many people from all walks of life. It's amazing how diverse the city is when it comes to race and culture.

Oh Canada...

We arrived when it was raining stone cold! Freezing as hell especially coming from a 32 deg. Celsius on average - country, Malaysia! HA HA!

We went by train, city car & walked everywhere, it was good how much walking i did, i felt like my muscles were really exercised... lol.

The day after, we went to Niagara Falls. I love that place especially the town's of Niagara on the lake. When I become rich, I want to have a chilled holiday house there. ;) I enjoyed the weather! Breezy with warm sun :) Birds and flowers were out and blooming! We went to the botanical garden....I had a great time.. :)

We got to catch a baseball game between THE RANGERS (Texas) vs. THE BLUE JAYS (Toronto) at the SKY DOME.

I performed at THE TRANE STUDIO on Tuesday night alonside Zoe and The Ninth Planet.

I loved both of them! Glad to share the same event with them :) Many friends showed up so that was cool.. :)

Hong to the Kong makes HONG KONG!

I am in Hong Kong now, my first impression when I got here was “It’s like Singapore, but bigger” so I’ve concluded that HONG KONG IS THE BIGGER VERSION OF SINGAPORE. Except that I didn’t feel too much like a robot…

The train ride from the airport to town was lovely because we passed through the mountains and hills and the sea…the train is SUPER fast though, it is probably the fastest train that I have been in….seriously. Even the MTR (LRT’s of HK) trains are foooooking fast. Didn’t stink of armpit at all and probably that’s because the wind and air conditioner blows hard…the public transports here don’t stink of people’s armpits or anything so that’s a good thing.

The weather is lovely, cool and breezy, about 28 deg Celsius…so you can imagine how that’s like walking in the streets…not too humid so NO your make up DOES NOT melt and your armpit doesn’t get too sweaty unless you suddenly decide to run. There is a 7 eleven everywhere which is cool…..I like how things are in blocks here, it’s easier man….

We stayed at CHUNG KING MANSIONS this really ghetto backpack place for HK$160. The toilet was so small that you could poo, shower and brush your teeth at the same time.

At night, we hung out with GOLD MOUNTAN at his crib together with MISS DJ YELLOW and VANDAL. He wanted to show us some magickal stuff before we head for dinner. So for dinner we had a feast!!! A BBQ feast and in total, we spent HK$1000 plus for 4 people just for dinner! I think that’s pretty crazy shit, I’ve never spent so much for dinner…. Dang…

HAHA.

Okay, so overall, I liked the stay here, wish I had more time so I could really explore the culture, people and the place….

At the airport now, waiting for flight to Vancouver…

Some thoughts that I gotta spill..!

A lot of things have happened for the past months of 2010. I think I achieved quite a lot since it hit 2010. 2009 was a good year for me, I think 2007 and 2008 were dark years for me but you know that’s how life works…god steals something valuable from you only to give you something even better in return… I have faith that things will fall into place when the time is right, and if it doesn’t….it was never meant to be, you get me? Just believe in destiny… and don’t be too upset about things not going according to plans…because seriously, sh*t happens. Accept things and face it as your go along…it will only make you stronger. Like the saying goes “You make it or break it”.

My life throughout 2008 up to 2009 influenced the songs that I sang on “From Malaysia With Love” EP. The experience was my biggest drive and motivation to keep moving forward and to finally come up with my CD (after waiting for 25 years to make it happen!) So I have to say thank you to YOU kevo, for having such a big impact in my life, love you so much!

Your music is like mini chapters in your life – a phase and definitely a symbol to represent who you are.
Over the years, growing up I was always musically active, playing in multiple bands…I just wanted to do everything and anything that was connected to music. Music is such a healing tool for the soul – you can go into other worlds and just forget reality, or even use that as a tool to heal others and yourself. Definitely the therapy for MY soul, not too sure about yours! ;)

This year, I managed to release my CD, do a video clip for Do It Again, (might do another one in Canada on my tour), Get my video on rotation on Astro HITZ.tv, got 2 songs on the radio, “Breaking Up” with Fly FM and “Do It Again” on HITZ.fm. “Breaking Up” reached no.1 on the chart. Radio interviews with Fly.fm and HITZ.fm, TV Interviews with 8TV Quickie, Astro DIGIMUSIC Top10, NTV7 Breakfast show…all acting as promo for “From Malaysia With Love”, got ‘Do It Again’ on ringtone *131*CODE# and Call or Send to get it on your phone! but for MAXIS only...

I have to really thank The MoveMint for helping me make things happen for me this year…it definitely is a kick start and a push for me to create a full length release now based on the latest chapter in life! ;) Oh….I see the sun alright, it’s definitely calling me….
I am excited to get the chance to have a Canadian Tour for over a month. There’s quite a bit of shows lined-up at the moment and more to add in the list really soon… Feel really blessed for this awesome opportunity.

Then join in the celebrations of MoveMint’s 2nd Anniversary Party on May 8. “Our strength is hip hop and urban music but not limited to any one genre, and we’re focused on talent development,” says Jason ’Vandal’ Schadt, co-founder of the independent music label. “It’s about any little thing we can do to make an impact, even if it’s coming up with the artistes’ profiles. We hit at the grassroots level, kind of like a schoolyard for artistes, before they hit the next stage.” The highlight of the event will be the launch of the EP, From Malaysia With Love, by singer-songwriter and MoveMint co-founder Nadhira Nishaa.

The multi-instrumentalist (she plays the piano, drums, guitar, sax and violin), now working on her debut album, has so far released two singles, Breaking Up and Do It Again, with the latter currently on the Hitz.fm Top 10 chart (the music video of the single at www.myspace.com/ira01).

She will belt out her smooth R&B and reggae-infused songs with a live band in a bon voyage performance (Nadhira and Vandal are set for a tour in Canada later in the month). MoveMint has been actively holding hip hop-related activities, including Think You Got Skillz? (TYGS), the country’s first rap battle event. So another highlight of the anniversary celebrations will be the first ever Malaysia-vs-Singapore rap battle, where the Supafriends Team SG will take on the TYGS All-Stars. Other programmes include beatbox presentations, freestyle demos, b-boy break dancing performances, live graffiti and an awards and appreciation ceremony. If these are not enough, there will be special performances by Schadt, Kraft, Micah and Senegalese dancehall artiste King Lhota as well as DJ Ideaz and The Silk Road.

“I think there’s plenty of talent here and more opportunities for them now as hip hop is pretty much a commercial pop culture,” says Schadt.

FINALLY. Positivity for the record..."Breaking Up" finally hit top spot..#1 (one) on Fly FM!!!! Too bad this is not the US other wise I'd be rich by now...ahhaha....

I want to take this moment to thank Fly FM for the support of my first collaboration single release and letting me rotate on the chart weeks after weeks... Thanks King Lhota for being part of it, The MoveMint , and ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL the listeners out there who showed mad love and support by voting. Atleast when I'm old an wrinkly I can tell my grandkids I had a song that sat on #1 on the radio charts..

Yeah, I'm partying all alone in my room right now just listening to some old tracks for some healing....in need of real healing right this moment.
What's new? Seems like I always have something I wanna share everyday but could never find the time to share my thoughts here. I had the craziest dream last night...when I say crazy...I mean crazy! I saw myself in a video clip on TV doing the sickest thing like I'm so cool...apparently I had some crazy powers that made me run so fast in the streets in between cars, jumping on it while I sing....dance on the car with backup dancers behind on OTHER cars...lol...it took place in some foreign country. ..it was wild!! HA HA. I've never seen myself rocking it out so hard... and as I watch myself, I was aware that it was a dream that I even asked the person next to me (in my dream) 'is that me? are you sure?' .... 'woah...' ...'how come I don't remember doing any of it?'

HAHAHHAHA..... Yup.

Well I'm really excited about The MoveMint 2nd Anniversary Party this 8th May 2010!! I will be launching my EP. Speaking of it, I got pretty tight deadlines to finish it up...doubt it'll be perfect...but it's all good. It's a present that I'll leave behind for CANADA on my tour. Hope and pray for all the positive things this year and many more years to come...I ain't stopping, gonna keep coming with FULL FORCE! watch out people..lol lol.. kidding.
When I have the time, I will take my time to make things right... :) Still have dreams of an album that's 100% me. YESS.... my piano and I and I and my piano. Okay I REALLY have to stop dreaming. This is me spending my time on my Friday night!

I just wanted to share my thoughts and laughter towards this....Ever since my song got onto the CAMPUR CHARTS (mid Jan 2010), my name was NEVER spelled correctly...at first it was Irie Ira (I may have confused the media with the 'Irie Ira' when I came out with "Breaking Up" ).. So then during the radio interview at Fly, I told them it's Nadhira... so my name changed but spelled 'Nadira'. Without the 'H'. and it went on for weeeeks like that...so I kinda gave up on trying to correct people with my name spelling... haha, so finally!! Today..... Jason says 'Hey your name on Fly changed again' ... so I checked....

and dum dum dummmmmmmmmm.......................

It's finally NADHIRA !!! Yay... so I'm happy... seeing the song sit on #2 with the name spelled the right way... :D

Please keep voting for me! I would like to see the song go to #1 just for the record! hehe....

SHE spent her formative years in different countries including the United Kingdom, Brunei and Indonesia.

“My dad’s work (in finance) took him all over the world and the family was always on the move,” says indie singer-songwriter Nadhira Nishaa.

Never staying in one place for more than several years made a big impression and exposed her to different cultures.

“It was exciting as a kid but, at the same time, making friends and then leaving them was hard.

“I’m used to it now. It helps in adapting to situations,” says the 25-year-old who coped by channelling her creative energy into music. Singing came naturally and with encouragement from her parents, she studied classical piano at London’s Royal Academy of Music.

“I loved every second of it and was always excited to learn new songs,” she says. Along the way she picked up the drums, guitar, saxophone and violin but confesses that the piano remains her best loved instrument.

At the moment, Nadhira is working on her debut album and has released a single, Breaking Up, which is currently on FlyFM’s Campur Chart.

Going under the moniker of Irie Ira, her smooth vocals provide a silky wash over the reggae-infused track that features Senegalese dancehall artiste King Lhota. “He liked my singing style and contacted me online. We got together and collaborated,” says Nadhira who also sings on his song, Konvict Souljah.

Her follow-up single, Do It Again, which comes with a new music video, is an R&B flavoured track produced by Tatsuro Miller of Global City Music.

She hopes to work with more producers, including a Colombian and a Belgian, to realise her musical vision.

“The tracks will be in English but I do have a few in Bahasa Malaysia done by Fathullah Luqman,” says the advertising and graphic design graduate, who works for Crush Communications.

As for the feel and flavour of the album, she has yet to decide on a coherent sound, preferring to let things play out as they go.

A fan of a wide spectrum of music genres, she used to be in alternative and rock bands during her teenage years.

“I played bass guitar for Sil Khannaz (local death metal band) in a concert in Indonesia which also featured Nidji, Padi and Dewa.

“It was a phase and I later decided to concentrate on my voice and singing,” says Nadhira, who grew up listening to a lot of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.

She has slowly been gigging in the music circuit with past performances at the Sunburst Music Festival and an opening set for DJ Yogi at Life Centre.

The plucky singer will be heading to Canada in May for a few shows and to test the waters with her music.

During “live” performances, she is known to sing covers in an R&B style.

“I like to make it into my own. One example was Michael Jackson’s Earth Song done a cappella, accompanied by some beatboxing,” she says.

Nadhira is also part of the MoveMint label, formed with Canadian rapper Vandal, which focuses on emerging artistes and talent development, currently catering to the hip-hop and urban music segments as a network and support group for the scene at the grassroots level.

An entry on her MySpace page says it best: “I am still struggling at it as there is so much to learn in this very short time given,” she writes.

“Just take me to wherever it is supposed to go. I want to take my listeners on a journey through my music.”

Anyways, here's just to clear up some of the mis-info's about the article.
I think I may have talked about the numerous bands I was involved in and I was never part of sil-khannaz nor did I ever play bass for them. I used to have a band called Amethyst and that band's guitarist is also the guitarist of Sil-Khannaz.:)

About featuring with bands like nidji, padi,dewa.... what I said was we SHARED THE SAME STAGE. That was it. We never featured with them.

The band I played bass for was called Bukit Hijau.

Am currently working on finishing up a few tracks which will be featured on my EP that I am planning to launch early May. We are planning to host The MoveMint 2nd anniversary. Haven't confirmed the location yet but we'll see...

The event is going to be the launch event for my EP "From Malaysia with Love". This EP is for me to bring to Canada...I am going there this May for just over a month. Will be performing in Toronto, Vancouver BC, Salt Spring Island...so I'd like to leave them something from here... hah!

Recyling Environtmental Charity Event

I performed for a Recycling Environmental Charity Event at One Utama last night (6th March 2010), I invited King Lhota to join the set and do our 'Breaking Up'. The show was abit different because I did an accapella with Vandal on the beatbox. I sang the 'EARTH SONG' by Michael Jackson. It was nice I liked it...had fun! I also got tons of drinks and 2 recycled notebooks :)

My MTV was successfully shot on 28th February 2010. I was very happy with the outcome and I have to admit...Adam's acting was awesome...

I’m left handed. Here goes the answers for you!

a) Which leg would you kick a ball or which hand do you use a racket? I kick a ball with my left leg and use a racket with my left hands.
b) Can you write with both hands? No. I have attempted to but unfortunately i can’t.
c) Which hand do you use to open a can with a can-opener or which hand do you use a scissors? I open a can with my right hands but i use the scissors with my left!
d) If you play the guitar, which hand do you use to strum the guitar? Left or right? or both? This is really weird but i play the guitar really well but strum it with my right hands. I control the chords with the left..
Growing up and being left handed was really hard! — until now i don’t know why my parents and school teacher tried to make me write with my RIGHT hand! When truth is, i’m a natural lefty! That was around the age of 6. By 7 years old everybody already figured that i was left-handed. I love it because it’s rare and when i meet another lefties, it’s like a common bond.

Tell the people a little about you and what you're working on now...

My name is Nadhira, I have a weird fascination for candles and I LOVE chocolate. Right now I’m busy working on tracks that I plan to use for my first CD release while planning a video shoot, and not to forget looking out for the right people to work with and make them part of the team :D

What are the challenges Malaysian artists face to break-out internationally?

Probably expressing themselves in an acceptable manner and to be accepted for being ‘safe’. In Malaysia, it is all about catering to the Malay market. That is the only way to live-off your music. This country is small and no one really goes to an extreme to do something no one has ever done that will give them a break through. Zee Avi is the first young-indie artist that made a break though internationally, you have to be different to be noticed. Creating is easy, but to deliver and be at par with the international standards is another thing.

What songs are you enjoying at the moment?

I am listening to a lot of AYO these days. She’s an afro-german singer songwriter. Writes from the heart and speaks through her soul. I feel her music. You should check out her album JOYFUL.

What’s in a tattoo? For Lynda it’s everything and more. A design freak since she was a kid, Lynda owns Pink Tattoos which sits strategically above skate shop Wheel Love. JUICE could’ve easily paired the opinionated skin inkier with another from her field but the gods bestowed upon us another female individual of equal indie-cred – Nadhira who is silently brewing a storm in the local music scene. An ex-metal singer and overpowering vocalist who brings more to the table than just a fierce attitude. Born in the same year and under the same signs, JUICE kicks back and let them take over.

So what got you into tattooing?

I’ve always been fascinated with tattoos. Even when I was still underage, I’ve always liked art. I used to curi-curi go online to look at tattoos. After I got my first one, the passion never died. But of course life and college got in the way. I went to art college as well so I was still drawing. I graduated in graphic design and advertising but I did copywriting when I came out.

Sounds familiar... All these phases…

Really? I just did it but it wasn’t fulfilling. I was going to get tattooed with someone else and then at that point I was like, “I need to change. I need to something else.” And then this person was ready to teach and I was willing to learn.

So what age did you start?

I only started tattooing about 2 and half years ago. I took a fulltime apprenticeship and quit advertising. For anyone to start you must really know how to draw. You must at least have that base where you want to learn how to draw. It’s something that comes naturally and when I’m designing or drawing, I’m very happy.

Define what art means to you in 3 words?

Passion, life and vision. My life has always revolved around art. If I didn’t have the passion I wouldn’t be doing it today. I started at about age 3 or 4. But I formally started when I probably could pick up a pen or marker. Go look at my parents’ books and passports, they have doodles in them.

So do are parents supportive?

Yes. Actually at first when I did the switch I was like err... My mum is easier to talk to. She was shocked but she was ok. But my dad was a bit… I was a bit scared to tell him but I eventually told him. And surprisingly he said I don’t agree with everything but I support you.

So why don’t you get into piercing as well?

When I was working in my old shop I used to assist a lot in piercing. But it’s just something that doesn’t interest me. I just feel like there is no finesse in piercing, it’s just flesh and impaling. Some people get the kick out of it. I just don’t get the satisfaction. I have nothing against piercing. My ex-boss told me to learn and pick it up cause it’s an easy way to earn money - a piercing normally cost RM150 and it’s very fast. But it’s just something I’m not into.

I love piercing. I used to be fully pierced. But I took it all off. I guess I just grew out of it. Is the tattoo business here more male dominated? And how do people perceive female tattoo artists?

I think generally the industry is and has been male dominated. To some, it may be kind of a novelty to be tattooed by a female artist while others may fantasize being tattooed by a bikini-clad tattoo artist (ala Kat Von D). I'm pretty fully clothed while working… Haha. The common perception when a female ventures into a male dominated industry is, "Can she really do it?" With tattooing though, your skill is something tangible immediately through your artwork and portfolio. So, I'm sure some doubt arises at first but once you show what you can do, everyone is on par. There are many well respected female artists around the globe.

Do you get more female clients because they feel closer to you or want a more feminine touch?

I would say I get a pretty equal amount of male and female clients. Most female clients definitely feel more comfortable with a female artist especially when working on more private areas of the skin. But I am, as clients have told me, more approachable and I suppose you can say that I add a feminine touch to tattoo designs when needed.

How did you discover that you could sing?

I guess probably when I was like 4 or 5 and I kept on singing. People would think I was a crazy kid because I used to sing all the time. Growing up here, I liked Sheila Majid. It was just a natural thing and I developed it. I didn’t take classes. It took me years to find my real voice and to actually know what songs suit me. Real singing comes from your diaphragm and that’s your real voice. You have to recognise it so you don’t change it while singing.

I think that being able to sing it is an amazing gift. Well noise can come out of my vocal cords but it’s not a beautiful noise.

It’s funny because I used to have a metal band before this. My friends who knew me as a singer were like, “What the hell are you doing? Why are you up there singing hardcore music?” It was an Indonesian band, something like Cannibal Corpse. There’s a technique on how to growl and not screw up your voice.

So how many bands were you in before u became a solo singer?

I use to be called the band whore because I had so many bands. At one point, I had 4 bands. And this was all in Indonesia. I lived there for about 3 to 4 years. I grew up overseas and now I’m back here. It’s the longest time I’ve been in a country. When I came back I was in 3 bands. I join bands for different things. Like, I play the bass and guitar and all that. My most sacred instrument since I was a kid is the piano.

Why did you leave all your bands?

When something holds you back, you end up doing nothing. Everyone just went their separate ways eventually.

So how long have you sang on your own?

I’ve always been singing on my own regardless of what band I was in. But I’ve become more public lately with what I’m doing and my music. I use to hide it a lot.

Why did you hide it?

Maybe because I didn’t feel that it was time for me to show it off. It was always something on the side. I appear in magazines here and there but mostly off the radar.

So you have a new album coming up?

Yeah, I’m trying to plan it. I do hope it will happen soon enough.

That intrigues me. You said you wanted to keep it in private. How did you come about? Did you meet certain people or were you scouted or head-hunted?

I think when you make your own music, you have something to show. Some people heard me and then they wanted to produce something for me to sing on. I had different types of music thrown my way. Trying to choose what suits me was the hardest part.

That’s a good problem to have…

Sometimes it’s not cool because then it makes it seem like you don’t really know yourself.

Pop music nowadays seems to project female singers as sex icons. What do you think about this and how can we reverse the trend?The only way to reverse the trend is for new influential female singers to present themselves in a way that does not symbolise sex. You can always be a singer and sell your image through good music and just by being yourself instead of using sex as your selling point. Your USP should be your personality, not your boobs and a$$. Not that I’m saying that because I have no a$$. Ha ha!

Do you think it's wrong to be revealing? And how far is too far?
There are many levels and ways of being revealing. You can be revealing in a slutty, cute or classy way, and it all really depends on how people carry themselves. So I can’t really answer this question because what a person wears depends on where they are at that time and what the culture of that place is. How far is too far? I guess when you wear hot pants that show your butt cheek, tucked around your a$$ so tight until pubes and camel toe can be seen is too much. Or when someone’s top is 1cm close to showing their nipple. Or even when guys wear jeans so tight that you can see the shape of their crotch. Hey, I did answer your question!

Good enough! You've sung in many bands from different scenes. In your opinion which is the most female-phobic?
Hmm…..does female-phobic mean males being vulgar to you when you are on stage? If so, I would say the crusty punk scene in Jakarta. I still remember going up on stage and have bunch of boys shouting ‘Bugil! Bugil! Bugil! Bugil!’ It’s like they have never seen a girl before or they tease you just to irritate you because they don’t like seeing you up there. I’m sure most girls have experienced standing in a performing crowd with guys taking the opportunity to grab or even touch their boobs and a$$ just for a second to satisfy their… god knows what.

Would you ever sign up to a major label?
Not unless I have the freedom to express my own being. Or at least write my own lyrics!

Fly FM radio Interview

Today was the radio interview with Fly FM. It was my first radio interview and I tell you it's fun as hell mainly because Hunny Madu was the one who interviewed me...she makes situations fun with her big laugh!
...I was happy with the questions she asked. Not the typical..."sooo when did you start"..."when did you get into music" ahha...it's alll goood... :)

So, do tune into FLY FM this Sunday from 7-8pm for not so interesting details. hahaha sorry I tend to bash myself coz i get a kick out of it. Yes, i get a kick out of making fun of myself. Sorry for being your next door dork. That sounds weird.

I will post up the session once i have time to put the clips together. In the meantime...continue to SUPPORT! *sorry Hunny, i said SUPPORT again for the 100th time today! I don't mean to keep saying SUPPORT, but ya, thanks for the SUPPORT!*

It's the END of JAN 2010 !

The performance by Najwa last Saturday as Cloth and Clef was sikkk… She is the one Malaysian woman who I highly look up to musically. Her vocal range is about 3 octaves? Maybe 4?..okay I’m not even going to guess ha ha! And she knows her blue keys at the top of her heart. Inspired is what I am. It’s nice seeing females more involved. Top-notch, high quality…and not to mention…humble too. I hope that it all stays this way and soon we can have a show and invite all the female artists to sing and collaborate! And struggle to overpower each other like Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston in their collabo ‘When you believe’….*jokes*

Essam put up a good event that night. There was so many bands from different genre’s…The Stoned Revivals made me cheerful =) …. Funky stuff goin on!

Liyana performed a cute set.

Honestly, the acoustics sound system upstairs was really good…

I also met up with a bunch of really old friends, and got a supporter all the way from Wales. She fell in love with my song and told me I was really ‘healthy’… do you know what ‘healthy’ means? Haha. OK nevermind.

My song premiered on the Fly FM’s Campur Chart for the first time on Sunday. It was no.9 on the chart. It was a funny slash weird feeling. Good stuff though…I hope that I even make it on the chart for more than 1 week! HAHA...
So you know, all the votes and sms's and call requests DO count.

Besides that, I personally like PESAWAT. Have had my eyes on them before they came out...

Anyways, see where the chart takes me and how long I will last on it!
